In a bid to identify corruption red flags in the WASH and Education Sector, Policy Alert yesterday took the #Upright4Nigeria campaign to the Ukana West Clan council in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. On arrival, Policy Alert team was received by one of her community partners Chief Micheal Akpabio who introduced the team to the traditional council.
In his remarks, the Executive Director of Policy Alert Mr. Tijah Bolton-Akpan thanked the Chiefs and women for showing interest in the fight against corruption and the desire to partner in the project while he took time to enumerate the dangers of corruption to the development of any society and expressed the desire of his organisation to work with the different villages to help them bring the attention of government to their communities as well help them in building their capacity with the right information to track development projects in the budget made designated for their communities. He also stated that Essien Udim was part of the six communities selected to take part in the SCRAP-C project in Akwa Ibom State while soliciting for their supports in owning the project. In his response, the clan council chairman, Chief Obot Eyo expressed his appreciation to Policy Alert for the visit while committing to partner with the organization as different members of the clan council comprising the different villages took time to show commitment to the project.
Earlier on, the Monitoring & Evaluation Officer of the Project, Faith Paulinus informed the clan council that Policy Alert is currently implementing the Strengthening Citizens Resistance Against Prevalence of Corruption in Akwa Ibom State with support from Actionaid Nigeria and part of the expected project deliverables is to identify issues of corruption through abandoned projects, cases of mismanaged intervention funds in other to help them demand remedial action.
